Build the confidence to create the life that you want…
Heather Marshall, PhD
As a compassionate Licensed Clinical Psychologist and experienced therapist, I specialize in empowering adults to overcome anxiety, trauma, avoidance, low self-esteem, and relationship challenges. My evidence-based approach focuses on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and trauma recovery. I will help you build confidence as you build mastery through your treatment. In our collaborative sessions, you'll learn effective tools to understand and manage emotions and overcome avoidance. We’ll also work on building and maintaining healthy relationships. Together, we'll develop a personalized plan tailored to your unique needs and goals. My style is warm and direct. I will tell you what you need to hear to help you make change.
Who I Help
Does the struggle to manage your emotions get in the way of participating in your life and relationships the way that you want to? It might feel as though you can never live up to the expectations of yourself or the people around you. That feeling can be especially painful when you long for connection with others and a sense of belonging. You might have even tried a lot of different types of therapy and not felt much change.
You are not alone, many people struggling with emotion regulation question their ability to overcome patterns of relating and other behaviors that keep them stuck. Often, these patterns are deeply engrained, intergenerational, and can stem from chronic invalidation and other forms of trauma.
Usually, making change to these types of patterns requires a structured and more directive approach in therapy. This may be why it feels like other types of therapies have not worked for you in the past. If this resonates with you, set up a free consultation and we’ll take the first step together.
How I Help
I utilize Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) which means I provide my clients with tools to get through moments of crisis without making it worse, to be able to focus more fully on the present moment, to build long-term emotion regulation skills, and to build satisfying relationships.
My style is collaborative, warm, and direct. You will track your emotions, behaviors, and interactions throughout the week and, together, we will identify patterns that are and are not working for you. From there, we will come up with solutions to try to help you get closer to your goals. I am participatory and you can expect 1) the conversation during therapy to be balanced, 2) to come away from your session time with actionable steps to work on, and 3) that I will be genuine and assertive with you.
In addition to providing DBT- informed services, I support my clients with evidence based treatments in recovering from past trauma. Specifically, we will identify how your trauma experiences have impacted your beliefs about yourself, other people, and the world around you and how that shapes your engagement in the world. We will collaborate together to help you heal from your trauma and find a more balanced view of your experiences. Finally, we will work on empowering you to move towards the life that you want to be living.
